Great dark fantasy horror books for teens.

Little Coraline is terribly bored, but that won’t stop her from stumbling into adventure–even in the haunts of her very own flat.

Coraline enters a strange world through a doorway to nowhere inside her home.

The protagonist lives in an old mansion that was divided up into four flats. As part of the division, a doorway was bricked up but otherwise left intact.

Two of the other flats are inhabited by curious adults who have interesting backgrounds and peculiar interests.

But no other children. The fourth flat is vacant and this leaves Coraline wondering what it’s like over in the vacant flat.

One day, she opens the odd door and discovers a passageway to the “Other” world. Here she discovers her “Other” family who purport to be having a much more interesting and exciting life on this side of the flat.

Coraline also meets her “other” neighbors who are even more intriguing and crazier versions of themselves than in the real world.

However, there is also a hint that something is a little off, despite the seemingly gracious attitude of the inhabitants of the Other world.

For one, they have buttons for eyes! Coraline is a clever girl and keeps her guard up refusing an invitation to stay in this Other world, but she’s ultimately drawn back when her loved ones are kidnapped and imprisoned there.

This story has all the “wonder” of Wonderland. Nothing is as it seems and all is fascinating in its absurdity.

Dread Nation
Dread Nation

This was actually a really interesting and unique horror books for teens read.

zombies and the American Civil War… it sounded awful.

Dread Nation is a zombie book set in the American Civil War era.

It follows Jane McKeene, a black girl who was taken from her family and trained as an Attendant, an expert in the art of killing zombies who is expected to go into service protecting a middle class white woman from the unquiet dead.

But Jane plans to use the education that her school has provided her with to go back to the Kentucky plantation she was born in, and hopefully reunite with the mother she was taken from.

From the blurb, I expecting the story to remain in Miss Preston’s School of Combat where it begins, but the story went in such a wonderfully unexpected direction that I found myself constantly surprised.

The heroine is witty and her voice is full of dry humour. The action scenes are also really well

the main characters are our black bisexual and her black aro-ace sidekick, both women.

It was a black magical horror books for teens.

the peculiars/students on the run, Miss Peregine poisoned and not able to fix the loop and protect her kids, Jacob and the other peculiars have to avoid the bad guys and find another headteacher to help Miss Peregine get back to normal.

-The majority of Hollow City was dull, there was too much repetitiveness and everything seemed contrived.

All Jacob, Emma, and the other Peculiars did was run from one place to another…

They occasionally happened to bump into other peculiars who helped them, and every few chapters the wights/hollows caught up to them and they had to fight them.

Not Even Bones (Market of Monsters)
Not Even Bones (Market of Monsters)

The story was suspenseful horror books for teens.

The characters are twisted and interesting.

It’s almost a thriller and almost an urban fantasy horror books for teens.

NOT EVEN BONES explores that grim and unsavory concept in the form of Nita and her family, dealers in the magical black market, selling magical body parts to collectors, perverts, and criminals.

Nita enjoys her work, with a blood-thirsty joy that’s reminiscent of Kerri Maniscalo’s heroine, Audrey Rose, in STALKING JACK THE RIPPER.

NOT EVEN BONES is a much better book, however, with tight plotting, morally grey characters, and a grim world and setting that at times seems almost too dark.

The writing was amazing ,Holly Black is one of few who can write something as adventures horror books for teens.

It’s the story of Zach, Poppy, and Alice who have been friends for such a long time that their friendship feels familiar even to us.

If imagination is at its heart, it’s the friendship that keeps it beating.

These kids, determined and stubborn, go through a fair amount of difficulty to get to where they want to go and, even though there are many arguments and disagreements, they stick up and care for each other until the end.

The narrator being Zach, we’re privy to what it’s like to be a young, hurt, pre-teenaged boy who wishes he could stay a kid for just a little while longer.

First Evil (Fear Street Cheerleaders Book 1)

I absolutely loved the Fear Street series horror books for teens.

This was the first of the Fear Street trilogies, and is one of the most iconic of the entire series.

There was as much petty high school drama as there was murder, which is the best thing about Fear Street if we’re being honest.

Also cheerleading is a really weird sport when you stop to think about it. The bus crash in the Fear Street cemetery gave the book a nice creepy start.

There were some pretty good scares as Bobbi’s life started to unravel

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

It’s a long time since a vampire horror books for teens.

Which is not to say The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is without romance.

If anything, one purpose of the story is to expose the seductive glamour of vampires as an abusive fiction.

Tana, our heroine, is seventeen, an accidental sole survivor of a massacre.

She’s not a Chosen One and has no special powers, but she shares a trait common to many heroes: a stubborn determination to do what is right, even in the face of mortal terror.

Immortal terror too, of course. The story is set in a world where vampire infection is rife, and where whole cities have been walled around.

These are the Cold towns of the title – although the first part of the title, The Coldest Girl in … is misleading and probably just for effect

The Name of the Star (The Shades of London)
The Name of the Star (The Shades of London)

A great paranormal urban fantasy horror books for teens.

It was utterly chilling and fantastic suspense.

this book is very thrilling suspense with a supernatural twist, it’s also a funny coming of age story.

Our heroine Rory is from Louisiana, and she has that sparkling Southern woman vibe that I find irresistible.

I love her character’s voice, the down to earth way she looks at life, and how she manages to find the wry humor in her situation.

First thing you need to know: this book is funny. Yes, there’s blood, mad murderers on the loose and many creepy encounters, but Maureen makes sure the reader has something to grin about every few pages.

Which was awesome, because it probably would’ve been a bit of a downer of a book otherwise.

The second thing you need to know: it’s a clever book. Maureen doesn’t condescend to her readers and she doesn’t beat them over the head with all the answers.

She shows amazing control over the pace of the story, and I think that is one of the things that makes this horror books for teens work so well.
